The first step to buying a home is asking yourself why you want to buy a home. Many people will have different reasons hence different questions. So, you may ask yourself; am I buying a house because I want to stop the rent?

To start building equity?
Do you have a place of your choice?
Start a family?
To entertain business partners?
Are you moving into a bigger house?

That will now lead you to next question. What type of house do you want? Then list the kind of home you want and where you want it. Think about focusing on one goal, from general to specific. Remember when doing this, "Be specific." Clearly distinguish between the "must haves" and "want to have".

Also, put the following into consideration; the area (city, suburb, country); Community (north, south, east or west); Neighborhood (new and established or new, particular school area, leisure facilities and other municipal services such as transportation, daycare, library, shopping, entertainment). Ask yourself how many minutes you will like to dedicate to transporting yourself to work.

Another factor you should think of is your desired home style, size, type, and design. How much space do you need? Does your situation require a walk-in home or you are open to stairs? Would you like a new house, refurbished house or an older one to remodel and repair?

One more thing, think about how long you will live in this house because someday either you or your heirs will want to sell the home.
